FAITH TO NAVIGATE DARKNESS

In this devotional I’m about to lean into some biblical tension that many believers have never considered about faith.

Faith is not only for seeing God’s promises. Sometimes, faith is for navigating in His presence.

One of the Bible’s most overlooked truths is that God often revealed His presence from within darkness.

When Solomon dedicated the Temple, he declared, “The LORD said that he would dwell in the thick darkness.” (1 Kings 8:12)

Earlier, when God descended upon Mount Sinai, “Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.” (Exodus 20:21)

This was not the darkness of sin or evil. It was the darkness of mystery—the place where God’s presence exceeded man’s understanding.

David affirmed the same truth when he wrote, “Clouds and darkness are round about him…” (Psalm 97:2). Darkness does not always signify God’s absence. Sometimes it surrounds His presence, reminding us that His glory often exceeds what our natural eyes can comprehend.

We naturally associate light with God’s presence and darkness with His absence. Yet Scripture teaches that there are seasons when God is fully present while intentionally hidden from our natural sight.

This is where biblical faith becomes radically essential.

Faith does not require perfect visibility. It trusts God’s presence even when His purposes remain concealed.

Perhaps the greatest evidence of mature faith is not that you can see where God is leading. It is not that it makes you comfortable. It is that not you are aiming for self-gain, satisfaction, or benefits.

It is that you keep walking when all you can see is Him, no matter how dark your circumstances may seem.

Pause

moment: be still, and invite the Lord to apply what you have read.

Reflect

Days 1–2
  • What line from this lesson is God pressing on your heart?
  • Where might pride, fear, or distraction be resisting obedience?
Days 3–4
  • Which scripture references will you re-read slowly in context this week?
  • Who needs an encouraging word rooted in what you learned?
Days 5–7
  • What is one concrete step of obedience you will take?
  • How will you remember this lesson after the week ends?

Respond

ABIDE IN HIM

Lord, thank You for this week’s word. Shape my heart by Scripture, not by noise or status. Where I have chased recognition, return me to simple obedience. Let the truth I have read bear fruit in love and humility. Amen.

Walk it out

  • Re-read one key passage from this lesson in the KJV, in full context.
  • Share one sentence of encouragement with another believer.
  • Take one quiet act of obedience you have been postponing.
  • Pray briefly each morning: “Lord, let Your word rule my choices today.”

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.
