ENCOUNTERING GOD
Over the past several days, we have revisited many of the names of God. We have prayed to Jehovah Jireh, trusted Jehovah Rapha, rested in Jehovah Shalom, sought Jehovah Makkadesh, stood beneath the banner of Jehovah Sabaoth, and remembered that El Qanna still guards the hearts of His people.
Yet the purpose of these names has never been information. The purpose is to encounter deeper depths of God through our daily relationship with Him.
Many know Him as El Shaddai, the Almighty God, but never trust His power. Others call Him Adonai, Lord and Master, while refusing to surrender their own lives. Some seek Jehovah Jireh for provision but resist Jehovah Makkadesh when He calls them to holiness. Many desire Jehovah Tsidkenu, the Lord Our Righteousness, while continuing to justify their own sin. Others pray to El Roi, the God who sees, yet live as though He does not see them at all. Some raise the banner of Jehovah Nissi, the Lord Our Banner, but never enter the battle. Many speak His names, but far fewer truly know Him.
What Do God’s Names Reveal About Your Faith?
Every name of God reveals something about His character, but every name also reveals something about us.
Jehovah Jireh asks whether we trust Him.
Jehovah Rapha asks whether we believe He still heals.
Jehovah Shalom asks whether His presence is enough.
Jehovah Makkadesh asks whether we truly desire holiness.
El Qanna asks whether our hearts belong exclusively to Him.
Jehovah Sabaoth asks whether we believe we are not alone.
The tragedy of modern Christianity is not that people do not know the names of God. The tragedy is that many know the names while refusing the relationship.
A Purposeful and Personal Theology
Moses met Jehovah beside a burning bush. Gideon discovered Jehovah Shalom beside an altar while hiding from the Midianites. Hagar encountered El Roi in the desert after being cast out. Abraham experienced Jehovah Jireh on a mountain with a bound son and a ram in the thicket. Elijah learned of Jehovah Sabaoth in a cave after believing he was the only one left. Their theology was not born in classrooms, but through encounters with God.
God’s names were never intended to decorate walls, fill notebooks, or become interesting Hebrew studies. They were given so that His people might know Him. Do you know Him? Have you encountered Him?
A Holy Introduction
When Moses asked God’s name, God did not merely provide information. He revealed Himself.
When Jesus prayed, He said, “I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me” (John 17:6).
Perhaps the question is no longer, “How many names of God do I know?” Perhaps the question is, “Which of His names have I experienced?”
Because one encounter with Jehovah is worth more than a lifetime of merely echoing the names of God from empty experiences. God still desires to introduce Himself. Are you ready for the encounter?
“And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee.” (Psalm 9:10)
