Day 155 Devotional
THE SIN BENEATH THE TENT
Israel had just witnessed one of the greatest miracles in Scripture.
The walls of Jericho had fallen without military genius. God had given His people the victory. But before the walls ever fell, God gave one clear command.
Everything devoted to destruction belonged to Him. The silver, the gold, the bronze, and the iron were to be placed into the Lord’s treasury. Nothing was to be taken for personal gain (Joshua 6:17–19).
Jericho was the first city conquered in the Promised Land. It was, in a sense, Israel’s firstfruits. And throughout Scripture, the firstfruits belong to God.
ACHAN CROSSED A HOLY BOUNDARY
Among the ruins, Achan found a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold.
Later he confessed, “I saw… then I coveted… and took…” (Joshua 7:21).
The garment was likely an expensive robe imported from Babylon, a symbol of wealth, prestige, and luxury. To Achan, it looked like an opportunity. God called it disobedience.
The issue was never the value of the garment. The issue was that Achan reached for something God had already claimed as His own.
HIDDEN SIN IS NEVER PRIVATE
Confident after the victory at Jericho, Israel marched against the much smaller city of Ai.
They were defeated. Thirty-six men died. Joshua fell before the Lord asking why Israel had lost. God’s answer is both simple and sobering:
He said, “Israel hath sinned” (Joshua 7:11). Although one man committed the act, the entire covenant community suffered the consequences. Scripture reminds us that our lives are far more connected than we often realize.
We like to believe our private compromises affect only us. God says otherwise.
WHAT WE BURY, GOD EXPOSES
Achan hid the stolen treasures beneath his tent, convinced no one would ever discover them.
But what is buried from people is never buried from God.
Eventually, the hidden garment, the silver, and the gold were uncovered, and so was the sin that had weakened an entire nation.
God was not exposing Achan because He hated him. He was protecting the holiness of His people.
DON’T HIDE WHAT GOD IS CALLING YOU TO SURRENDER
One hidden sin turned victory into defeat. One act of disobedience brought unnecessary defeat. One man’s compromise affected countless others.
The lesson is as relevant today as it was in Joshua’s day. Secret sin is never actually secret.
If there is something buried beneath the tent of your heart, don’t wait for God to expose it. Bring it into His light through repentance.
The God who lovingly convicts is also the God who graciously forgives.
moment: be still, and invite the Lord to apply what you have read.

Reflect
Days 1–2
- What line from this lesson is God pressing on your heart?
- Where might pride, fear, or distraction be resisting obedience?
Days 3–4
- Which scripture references will you re-read slowly in context this week?
- Who needs an encouraging word rooted in what you learned?
Days 5–7
- What is one concrete step of obedience you will take?
- How will you remember this lesson after the week ends?
Respond
STAY WITH THE WORD
Lord, thank You for this week’s word. Shape my heart by Scripture, not by noise or status. Where I have chased recognition, return me to simple obedience. Let the truth I have read bear fruit in love and humility. Amen.
Walk it out
- Re-read one key passage from this lesson in the KJV, in full context.
- Share one sentence of encouragement with another believer.
- Take one quiet act of obedience you have been postponing.
- Pray briefly each morning: “Lord, let Your word rule my choices today.”
Teach me thy statutes.
