Week 4: Unpopular, No Spotlight, No Problem

“And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hands.”

1 SAMUEL 17:47

Encounter

God gives victories in the shadows.

Read

According to the Bible, unpopular people conquer giants too. God gives victories even when people won’t give you any credit.

Elhanan was a man from Bethlehem (2 Samuel 21:19). One of David’s warriors, not the king. Not a prophet and not a priest. He was not famous, quoted, or celebrated. He lived in the shadow of David’s legacy. And yet, God wrote his name into Scripture.

Ordinary names, written in Scripture

“And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.”

2 SAMUEL 21:19 (KJV)

The Bible tells us that Elhanan killed the brother of Goliath. Not the famous giant David defeated, but his brother. That detail matters. Giants didn’t stop appearing after David’s victory, and God didn’t stop empowering ordinary people to face them.

The rest fell too

“These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.”

2 SAMUEL 21:22 (KJV)

That’s why Elhanan is so easy to miss. We’re drawn to spotlight moments and singular champions. But Elhanan didn’t need a reputation. He needed courage, obedience, and trust.

The truth is, the battle is the Lord’s (1 Samuel 17:47). From the beginning, God was never forming just one hero—He was forming a people. In Christ’s kingdom, the overlooked overcome. And the giants still fall, not just once, but again and again.

Whatever your giant may be—fear, anxiety, debt, addiction, doubt, loneliness, depression, arrogance, burnout, or insecurity—go conquer it.

Pause

moment: thank God for unseen faithfulness, and ask for courage without applause.

Reflect

Days 1–2
  • Where have you believed your obedience “doesn’t matter” because it won’t be seen?
  • What would courage look like if no one applauded?
Days 3–4
  • What “giant” keeps reappearing in your life, and what would faithful action look like this week?
  • Where do you need to stop chasing spotlight and start chasing obedience?
Days 5–7
  • Who is one “ordinary” person you can encourage because they are fighting unseen battles?
  • What is one step you will take to confront your giant with God’s help?

Respond

NO SPOTLIGHT NEEDED

Lord Jesus, give me courage that doesn’t need credit. Train my heart to obey in the shadows and trust You with the outcome. Where fear has felt too big, make me faithful. Where I have chased applause, bring me back to simple obedience. Let Your victory spread through Your people, again and again. Amen.

Walk it out

  • Name your “giant” plainly this week (fear, anxiety, debt, addiction, doubt, loneliness, depression, arrogance, burnout, insecurity).
  • Take one small obedient step toward confronting it, even if no one sees it.
  • Encourage one overlooked person who is quietly fighting well.
  • Pray 1 Samuel 17:47 aloud and give God the credit before the outcome arrives.

No spotlight. No problem.
